Design:

This coin features a female cougar leaping through the snow toward her prey. Viewed from the position of the prey animal, this dynamic portrait presents to stunning effect the cougar's most important hunting tools: her large, powerful fore-paws, highly muscular back legs, long counterbalance tail, strong shoulders for holding down prey, and sharp gaze. In a stylized landscape of snow-covered rocky terrain, she leaps with intense focus toward the viewer. The cougar is finished in gold plating to bring the intensity of the image to life.

Design:

This coin presents a map-like representation of Canada through the use of symbolism. The maple leaf's outline mimics Canada's geographical shape, stretching out to cover the far reaches of Canada. As though traveling from one coast to another, the Canadian Rocky Mountains and a white-tailed deer in the leaf's left-most point represent the rugged wilderness of the western provinces. Behind the deer, wheat symbolizes the grain-growing Canadian prairies. The fishing industry and the Eastern provinces are represented in the right leaf point by a fish, a boat and the famed Peggy's Point Lighthouse. A partial map of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut - home to many of Canada's native peoples - dominates the leaf's middle point, while the Tower of Peace at the base symbolizes the government and the tie that binds all Canadians together.

Description

The North American continent's heaviest land animal is Bison bison, known commonly as the American bison or American buffalo. For millennia, the American bison and its ancestors dominated much of central North America.  Bison ranged from what is now Alaska, down through the Canadian prairies and American Midwest, as far south as central Mexico and as far east as near the Appalachians of the United States. In herds of tens of millions, they wandered along ancient feeding routes so well worn that they are still visible from the air today. Many of these routes, particularly in the United States, were eventually used as wagon trails and, later, for railway beds.

However, by the end of the nineteenth century, over-hunting and deliberate large-scale exterminations by settlers had reduced bison numbers from more than 60 million to only a few hundred. Concerted conservation efforts throughout the twentieth century helped to bring the numbers of wild bison up in both Canada and the United States. In total, there are estimated to be about 30,000 non-domesticated bison in Canada and the United States today.  In addition, several hundred thousand bison are now raised on ranches.

Design:

The reverse design by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant presents a portrait of three adult bison and a bison calf in their natural habitat. On the left in the foreground, the small knob-kneed calf walks calmly beside three adults as they graze with their enormous heads bent to the low grasses of the prairie. The largest adult, furthest from the viewer, has its head slightly raised as though listening and watching for danger. The bison's shaggy fur and the color variations between adults and calf are beautifully rendered through masterful engraving and the use of varied finishes.
