Description
The North American continent's heaviest land animal is Bison bison, known commonly as the American bison or American buffalo. For millennia, the American bison and its ancestors dominated much of central North America.  Bison ranged from what is now Alaska, down through the Canadian prairies and American Midwest, as far south as central Mexico and as far east as near the Appalachians of the United States. In herds of tens of millions, they wandered along ancient feeding routes so well worn that they are still visible from the air today. Many of these routes, particularly in the United States, were eventually used as wagon trails and, later, for railway beds.

However, by the end of the nineteenth century, over-hunting and deliberate large-scale exterminations by settlers had reduced bison numbers from more than 60 million to only a few hundred. Concerted conservation efforts throughout the twentieth century helped to bring the numbers of wild bison up in both Canada and the United States. In total, there are estimated to be about 30,000 non-domesticated bison in Canada and the United States today.  In addition, several hundred thousand bison are now raised on ranches.

Special features:
·        This is the eighth coin in the Royal Canadian Mint's exciting new 2014 ‘O Canada’ series, focusing on iconic Canadian images: the ancient and powerful bison.
·        Masterfully crafted by Royal Canadian Mint engravers using a variety of engraving techniques and finishes to bring depth and texture to this stunning image of Canadian wildlife.

·        For our Canadian customers, this coin is GST/HST exempt.
·        Limited worldwide mintage.

Design:
The reverse design by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant presents a portrait of three adult bison and a bison calf in their natural habitat. On the left in the foreground, the small knob-kneed calf walks calmly beside three adults as they graze with their enormous heads bent to the low grasses of the prairie. The largest adult, furthest from the viewer, has its head slightly raised as though listening and watching for danger. The bison's shaggy fur and the color variations between adults and calf are beautifully rendered through masterful engraving and the use of varied finishes.

Packaging:
Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell with a custom beauty box.

Design:
This coin displays a full-body profile portrait of a bison in its natural habitat. Viewed from its right side with its head and hindquarters arched toward the viewer, a massive American bison bull stands with one hind leg raised in mid-stride. Its shaggy beard, blunt nose, small eye, and upturned horns are presented to stunning effect through the masterful use of varied finishes and engraving. The powerfully muscled, hunched back and fur-lined forelimbs give way to a low sloped hind section ending in a short fringed tail. On the bison's abdomen we see scars from ancient battles with other bulls and perhaps predators like wolves. The dust seems to rise from beneath the bulky mass of the plains giant as its feet stir the scraggly open grassland.

Packaging:
Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell with a custom beauty box.

Description
Knowledge is learned. Wisdom is experienced. But wisdom cannot be gained through blind eyes. One must watch and listen; find lessons in what is going on around them. The beaver teaches this lesson well as it observes its environment, using the sound and movement of water to determine where to build its dam and lodge. Then, with its sharp teeth and keen engineering skills, it builds its community. A forest cannot thrive without the unique gifts of all its residents; the wisdom that is passed from generation to generation.

The beaver is one of seven animals featured in the Seven Sacred Teachings, practiced by Aboriginal people throughout North America, for living a full and happy life. The beaver's lesson is wisdom; going beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge to carefully observe one's environment and find lessons in life events. Experience is the foundation of wisdom, and the sharing of individual wisdom is the cornerstone of a strong community.

A perfect gift for anyone with an interest in First Nations art, culture, or history.

Special features:
·        Fifth of seven coins in this exciting new series celebrating the Seven Sacred Teachings of love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, and truth practiced by First Nations people across Canada and throughout North America. These seven coins present an outstanding collection of aboriginal wisdom and art.
·        Features an original design by Métis artist Nathalie Bertin, inspired by the Woodland style of her Algonquin ancestry.
·        Powerful image reflects humanity's dependence upon Mother Earth; the great wisdom that can be learned from observing nature, particularly the beaver which taught the Anishinaabe people about powerful medicines in poplar tree bark.
·        Stunningly crafted in 99.99% pure silver with selective gold plating, perfect for anyone with an interest in First Nations art, culture, and history, and to encourage anyone in the pursuit of their dreams.
·        For our Canadian customers, this coin is GST/HST exempt.
·        Limited worldwide mintage.

Design:
Canadian Métis artist Nathalie Bertin has created a powerful image of a beaver offering a tree branch to an abstract figure. The beaver's size emphasizes the importance of nature to humanity's survival and represents how the beaver taught the Anishinaabe people about the poplar tree's powerful medicines; its bark providing the background pattern that reinforces the beaver's teachings.

Packaging:
Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell protected by a custom beauty box.

A beautiful gift coin!
