This lovely butterfly's colouring and spot patterns represent an important protective adaptation: the red-spotted purple has evolved to mimic a poisonous butterfly, the Pipevine Swallowtail.

Limenitis arthemis astyanax looks much like its close relative, the well-known White Admiral butterfly.  Its upper wings are bright bluish-purple and outlined with several rows of blue-white dashes.  The upper hind wing is marked with lovely iridescent blue-green squares.  Where their ranges overlap, the red-spotted purple also bears the familiar white bands of the White Admiral.  The red-spotted purple is most commonly found on the outskirts of wooded areas, on gravel roads sunning its wings, in open meadows, and in woodland clearings.

Did you know…
·        The red-spotted purple prefers to lay its eggs on plum and oak leaves.
·        The adults fly throughout the summer, from June to mid-September, and are diurnal, restricting their active period to daylight hours.

A thoughtful and valuable gift for nature lovers and art aficionados.

·        This painted and engraved 99.99% pure silver coin highlights the intense coloration of the red-spotted purple butterfly.

Design:
This coin features a profile portrait of a red-spotted purple drinking nectar from the heart of a black-eyed Susan flower.  The butterfly, engraved and colored in full glorious color, is viewed from its right side.  The viewer is presented with a lovely view of the red-spotted purple's under-wing.  Here we see the characteristic dark purple-black coloring, with some of the blue iridescence that characterizes most of the upper side of the delicate wing.  The light blue-white markings around the wing contrast prettily with the bright red spots that give this butterfly its name.  The butterfly stands on top of an engraved black-eyed Susan flower, drinking nectar from the flower's center.

Packaging:
Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell with customer hologram beauty box.

Description
From backpackers in Berlin to peacekeepers in Pakistan, Canadians are immediately identifiable by a singular image they faithfully sport on pins, badges, and appliqués: the red maple leaf.

This lyrical cipher has symbolized Canada and Canadians for nearly two hundred years.  Historians generally recognize the adoption of the maple leaf by Quebec's Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Montreal in 1836 as the first official use of the symbol to represent an element of Canadian culture.

The symbol was soon popularized in print, song, and in the small markers - such as lapel pins - with which Canadian residents of various origins honored their homelands.  The English had their roses, the Scots their thistle, the Irish their shamrocks, and the French their fleur-de-lis - and native-born Canadians quickly chose the prosaic maple leaf.

The idea of including the maple leaf on Canada's national flag took root with Lester B. Pearson in World War I, when he noted that every Canadian battalion had included some form of the maple leaf in its insignia.  Fifty years later, in 1965, under his leadership as prime minister, Canada's famous red-and-white maple leaf flag was born.

In addition to the maple leaf's presence on various provincial flags and coats of arms, the country's coinage has featured maple leaves, wreaths, and boughs in various forms for most of Canada's history.  In fact, the maple leaf was present on all Canadian coins from 1876 to 1901.  Since that time, it appeared on Canadian pennies until 2012.

Special features:
·        Third coin using this maple leaf design, second coin in our series of colored maple leaves - this year: green.  (Last year’s coin with red is in stock, as well!)
·        This coin has been struck, and translucent enamel has been added into the struck hollow maple leaf shape at the center.
·        A select addition to any numismatic collection that celebrates not only the robust Canadian spirit but also the exceptional craftsmanship offered by the Royal Canadian Mint.
·        This fine silver coin highlights the beauty and variety of the iconic maple leaf.
·        Limited worldwide maximum mintage of 7,500!

Design:
The reverse image features the impression of a colored maple leaf among smaller maple leaves.

Packaging:
Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell protected by a standard beauty box.

Description
Blessings are an integral element of Chinese culture. In offering them with a coin, medal, or other traditional method of well-wishing, the giver expresses to the recipient a wish or hope for their future happiness.

Written and spoken Chinese lends itself particularly well to symbolism and double meaning. Through the graphic symbols of the written language and the overlap of similar-sounding words, the culture has evolved a tradition of employing letters, sounds, and images to convey robust messages with amplified meaning. These messages are readily understood within Chinese and Chinese Canadian culture.

This coin features a beautifully colored and engraved design conferring upon its owner blessings of happiness, success, long life, joy, and good fortune.

Special features:
·        This proof-quality 1/10-ounce coin of 99.99% pure gold features a beautifully engraved design conferring upon its owner blessings of happiness, success, long life, joy, and good fortune.
·        A very limited mintage of only 2,000 means that this coin is sure to be sought after by collectors for decades to come.
·        Makes a thoughtful gift or fine collectible.
·        Limited worldwide mintage.

Design:
This coin features a series of symbolic images representing the traditional Five Blessings of Chinese culture. In a polished crescent on the left side of the coin appear five animals that traditionally connote blessings.  These include a bat for happiness, a deer for career success, a crane for long life, and two magpies for joy. The right side of the coin is richly decorated with circular imagery overlaid with the Chinese symbol used to offer a wish for good fortune.

Packaging:
Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell with a black beauty box.

Did you know…
·        The character for "good fortune" is not a formal or spoken word, but rather an ideogram used in some regions to convey a wish or hope for good fortune.
·        The number "5" is considered to be of imperial significance and auspicious in Chinese tradition because of the central position of the 9 single digit numbers. "5" is usually used as the number for repeated designs or decorations used in the imperial court of China.
·        The concept of "prospects" and the word for bat (fu) are homophones in spoken Chinese. The bat has thus become a well-known symbol for "good prospects."
·        The notion of success, particularly emolument or success related to one’s salary, is homophonic with the word for deer in spoken Chinese (lu). The deer is thus used to connote the qualities of endurance, longevity, and grace that provide one with a positive position in life.
·        The crane has long been associated with the notion of longevity in Chinese tradition. In art and literature, it is often portrayed in the presence of elders and gods and its white feathers recall the white hair of old age. As a long-lived bird with high status in Chinese imperial tradition, it is an ideal symbol for longevity.
·        The word for "joy"—xi—is the first sound in the word for "magpie" (xi que), making the magpie a symbol associated with luck and happiness. When two magpies are portrayed facing one another, as on this coin, the recipient’s happiness is doubled
