Design:
This first coin in the series
features a three-quarter profile portrait of a male white-tailed deer. It is designed to showcase the singular
beauty of a mature male white-tailed deer at the height of its strength. This
image renders in fine detail the 10-point antler rack, large ears, distinctive
eyes and muzzle, and strong neck and back of its subject. The antlers, which
will be shed soon after they have reached their peak growth for the year, bear
tines that point sharply upward and bend slightly forward. The lighter coloration
of its inner ear, eyes, nose, and lower jaw, along with the rippling muscles of
its powerful neck and back, are portrayed in dimensional detail by Royal
Canadian Mint engravers.
During the late-November
mating season, mature male deer are at their most majestic - their bodies
rounded and muscular in anticipation of the coming cold season, their fur
thickened against the cold, and their broad necks and heads crowned by a massive
rack of antlers. These antlers are a biological wonder. Composed of
velvet-covered cartilage that hardens into bone, the antlers of Canada's
white-tailed deer are among the fastest-growing mammal bones on Earth.
Following the annual mating season, these bone structures, which are dead by
the time they are used to assert dominance in the autumn, will fall off. The
buck will begin to grow a new set of antlers the following spring.
·
Antler growth is largely
restricted to male deer (bucks). Antlers can grow more than a centimeter a day.
·
In their earliest growth
stage, antlers are formed of living cartilage covered in velvety skin that
feeds bone growth through a complex vascular system.
·
Antlers grow from the
tips. Growth is triggered by seasonal
daylight cycles.
·
Each year, for about the
first seven years of the buck's life, the antlers will grow larger than the
previous year.
·
Antler size varies
widely and is influenced by a broad range of factors, ranging from genetics to
environment to food availability.
Packaging:
Each coin is
encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell protected
by a custom beauty box.
