Description
(Most eBay sellers use stock artwork from the Mint to depict the Canadian numismatic coins that they are listing on eBay.  We use real photos of actual coins.)

It was the sensational story of its time, one that still captivates the imagination 170 years later.  Under Sir John Franklin's command, two Royal Navy ships set sail with every expectation of success in May of 1845.  Their mission: to chart the last unknown part of the Northwest Passage - yet they never returned.  Subsequent expeditions that searched for the missing ships uncovered stories and relics.  Then, in September 2014, came news that stunned the world: Canada's Victoria Strait Expedition had discovered the wreck of H.M.S. Erebus, Franklin's flagship.  The lost ship was found lying on the Arctic seabed.  This scientific breakthrough raises the possibility that new evidence could help solve some of the lingering mysteries surrounding the lost expedition and its final days.  What really happened to the Franklin expedition?  In its Lost Ships in Canadian Waters series, the Royal Canadian Mint commemorates this famously ill-fated voyage with a coin that depicts Franklin's ships before they were lost to the ice and cold waters of the Canadian North.

Special features:
  • EDGE LETTERING: Each coin includes edge lettering bearing the names "H.M.S. TERROR" and "H.M.S. EREBUS"
  • This coin is the second in the Lost Ships in Canadian Waters series.  This series commemorates well-known vessels lost in Canadian waters, and the stories that have emerged from the events surrounding their final fate.
  • This coin serves as a unique commemoration of the ill-fated Franklin expedition and its importance to the scientific exploration of Canada's Arctic region.
  • A stunning color portrait of H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror framed within the coastlines where the ships were abandoned in 1848.
  • This coin is also a poignant reminder of the 2014 discovery of H.M.S. Erebus by a Parks Canada-led expedition.  A truly historic moment for Canada, the find has added a new chapter to a story that has captivated so many, and may finally offer answers to the enduring questions that surround the expedition's demise.
  • For our Canadian customers, this coin is GST/HST exempt.
  • Very limited worldwide mintage.

About the Design:
The reverse design features Canadian marine artist John Horton's depiction of the Franklin expedition's H.M.S. Erebus, in the foreground, with H.M.S. Terror to starboard.  Edging their way through ice-filled waters, the three-masted wooden vessels are seen traveling at a reduced speed under shortened canvas.  The cool color palette recreates the blue hues of the sky in daylight and the darker, icy waters of the Arctic.  This stunning portrait situates the ships off of the northwest coast of King William Island, providing geographical context for their location when first deserted in 1848.  Edge lettering, bearing the names "H.M.S. TERROR" and "H.M.S. EREBUS”, further commemorates the two vessels and the 129 men who were lost.

Did you know...
H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror were converted bomb vessels that had been outfitted for a previous voyage to Antarctica.  There, the southernmost active volcano on Earth was named after the Erebus - as was a crater on Mars.
Lady Jane Franklin spent much of her fortune financing attempts to search for her husband and his crew.  These included the 1857-1859 voyage commanded by Captain Sir Francis Leopold McClintock that confirmed the tragic end of Franklin's expedition.
H.M.S. Resolute was part of an unsuccessful search for the Franklin expedition, and became one of four ships to be abandoned in the ice in 1853. Recovered by an American whaler, its timbers were re-used to create two famous desks, including the Resolute Desk, which has been used by several presidents of the United States.  (The Resolute Desk was featured in the blockbuster, “National Treasure” motion picture.)
Franklin's expedition may have been ill-fated, but his intended route south of Victoria Island was used in 1906 by Roald Amundsen during his successful transit of the Northwest Passage.

Sir John Franklin and his crew set sail from Greenhithe, England on May 19, 1845 with instructions to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean via the Northwest Passage.  Both H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror were reinforced, equipped, and well-stocked for this expedition, which initially looked promising.  They were last seen by Europeans in Baffin Bay in the summer of 1845.

With no news from the 129 men and no confirmed sightings of the ships by 1848, the British government offered a substantial reward for information on the Franklin expedition's fate.  This inaugurated one of the greatest search and rescue operations in history, marking an unprecedented period of exploration as vast areas of the Canadian Arctic were charted.  The first clues to the expedition's whereabouts were finally found in 1850 when searchers located Franklin's 1845-46 overwintering site at Beechey Island.  There they observed hundreds of empty food tins and
three graves.  But as the search continued, Inuit testimony and the discovery of additional expedition-related materials revealed that the crew had all perished in the vicinity of King William Island.

The recovery in 1859 of a record in a cairn on King William Island's west coast would offer the only written confirmation of the expedition's demise.  This message reported that both ships had become icebound in 1846 in Victoria Strait and that Sir John Franklin had died on June 11, 1847.  By the time the ships were abandoned on April 22, 1848, 20 additional officers and men had also perished; the expedition's final word was that the 105 survivors intended to head for the Great Fish River (now known as the Back River) - but neither the men nor the ships would be seen again, at least by Europeans, until H.M.S. Erebus was identified in 2014 by Parks Canada.

The story of the Franklin expedition has continued to captivate, often blurring fact and fiction.  Theories abound about the last days for many of the 129 men lost, including the roles played by lead poisoning, scurvy, starvation, and cannibalism.  But recent discoveries may in time shed new light on some of these theories.  In the meantime, interest in H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror remains high, spurred by those who seek to solve one of the world's most famous maritime mysteries while revisiting a piece of Canada's national narrative.

Canada 2015 $3 Samuel de Champlain 400th Anniversary in Huronia 1/4 oz. 99.99% Pure Silver Proof

Design emulates the famed 17th century astrolabe, long attributed to Champlain!

Specifications
Composition - 99.99% pure silver
Finish - Proof
Weight (g) - 7.96 (one-fourth troy ounce)
Diameter (mm) - 27
Edge - serrated
Certificate - serialized (serial numbers will vary)
Face value - 3 dollars (a legal tender Canadian coin)
Artists - Laurie McGaw (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse)

Description
In 1610, having mapped, explored, and established settlements in what is now eastern Canada and Quebec, Samuel de Champlain tasked his young interpreter and pathfinder, Étienne Brûlé, with exploring the land west of the Island of Montréal—the limit at that time of Champlain’s own explorations.  Brûlé was to learn the language and culture of the people there, and establish positive relations with them.  When Champlain reconnected with Brûlé a year later, he was shocked at his young charge’s transformation: Brûlé had done exactly as his leader had commanded. He dressed, lived, and spoke in the fashion of the Hurons and had begun blazing trails throughout the region southwest of Georgian Bay.

In 1615, Champlain followed the path laid by his young envoy, traveling up the Ottawa River to the Mattawa, and along tertiary waterways to Lake Nipissing.  From there, Champlain travelled via the French River to Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.  He made landfall near what is today Penetanguishene, where he set up the home base from which he explored Huronia

A thoughtful introduction to collecting for history buffs, fans of geography, and Canadian heritage enthusiasts!

Special features:
•   The Royal Canadian Mint commemorates the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s momentous journey to Huronia with a stunning coin crafted in 99.99% pure silver.
•   Celebrate an important moment in the exploration of the land that would one day become Canada.
•  Own an original work of art depicting an antique artifact, the astrolabe, and highlighting the discoveries and adventures of famed explorer Samuel de Champlain.
•  For our Canadian customers, this coin is GST/HST exempt.

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Laurie McGaw, this coin is uniquely engraved to emulate the famed 17th century astrolabe—long attributed to Champlain—found in Cobden, Ontario.  Against this navigational tool is set a full-body portrait of Samuel de Champlain.  Through the spaces between the astrolabe’s latitude and longitude crosshairs, we are presented with engravings of scenes from Champlain’s journeys in Huronia, including an image of a tall sailing ship and a scene in which Huron guides assist Champlain on portage.

Did you know…
•   The Huron people called themselves the Wendat (or Wyandot).  An agrarian culture that cultivated maize, squash, and beans, they spoke Wendat, an Iroquoian language.  In the early 1600s, the Wendat occupied the region southwest of Georgian Bay, on the peninsula between Lake Ontario and Lake Huron.  They called this land Wendake, but it became known to European explorers and fur traders as Huronia.
•  Étienne Brûlé was the first European to have set foot on the shores of Lakes Huron, Superior, Erie, and Ontario.  Though Champlain is the first to have documented the “discovery” of Lake Huron, Brûlé had been there first.
•  One of the symbols most associated with Champlain today is the mariner’s astrolabe.  This seventeenth-century navigational instrument helped cartographers to determine their latitude and allowed them to produce accurate maps.  One such astrolabe, found in 1867 on an old portage route near what is now Cobden, Ontario, was long thought to have belonged to the famed explorer himself.  He was presumed to have lost it during his first journey up the Ottawa River in 1613.  Experts today dispute this theory, suggesting that the astrolabe is more likely to have been cached by missionaries who followed this route on a regular basis in later decades.  While we will never know whether or not the famous astrolabe ever belonged to Champlain, we can be certain that he carried similar ones during his travels, including to Huronia in 1615.
•  Champlain’s most notable achievement from this journey was his detailed account of the culture of the Huron and Algonquin peoples and his cartography and description of the region now known as Ontario.  The lengthy stay that allowed these observations was partly unplanned.  In October 1615, Champlain and his allies engaged in battle with the Onondaga, but were unsuccessful.  The explorer was injured in the battle and spent the winter of 1615-1616 in Huronia.  While he regained his strength for the trip back to Quebec, he learned about the people and geography of the region, recording his discoveries for future publication.  Although this was Champlain’s last journey to what is now Ontario, these records of his encounters with the first peoples of Huronia remain artifacts of lasting cultural importance.

Canada 2015 $20 American Scimitar Sabre-Tooth Cat 1 oz. 99.99% Pure Silver Coin

SKU# OK144428E

Canada 2015 $20 American Scimitar Sabre-Tooth Cat 1 oz. 99.99% Pure Silver Coin

Prehistoric Animals Series

Specifications
Composition - gold (99.99% pure)
Finish - proof
Weight (g) - 31.39 (1 troy ounce)
Diameter (mm) - 38
Edge - serrated
Certificate - serialized (serial numbers will vary)
Face value - 20 dollars (a legal tender Canadian coin)
Artists - Julius Csotonyi (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse)

Description
The scimitar cat (Homotherium serum) is arguably one of the most awe-inspiring animals of the Ice Age.  Famous for its knife-like fangs, the scimitar cat's teeth were shorter than those of the better known sabre-tooth cat, Smilodon fatalis, but were equally lethal: its sabres were coarsely serrated, just like a steak knife, making them perfectly suited for slicing through the soft flesh of its prey.

This fierce feline was a master at pursuing prey, which consisted of ungulates such as horses and camels.  The scimitar cat would charge from behind a bush or tall grasses with blinding swiftness, bowl over its intended prey and slash the throat with its lethal canines.  Then, once the uproar subsided, the cat dragged its latest meal to its den.

It was roughly the size of a lion, but with a lighter body that gave it more running flexibility than its Ice Age cousins, other sabre-tooth cats, and the American lion.  It had a short tail like a lynx, and long, powerful forelimbs but slightly shorter hind legs that gave it a hyena-like stance.

This fascinating cat ranged from Beringia, a prehistoric grassland region stretching from Siberia to Alaska, which was too dry for glaciers, all the way to southern North America by way of the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Alberta. Having gone extinct sometime between 13,000 and 11,000 years ago, the scimitar cat's demise was likely linked to the extinction of the large Ice Age herbivores.

Special features:
  • To ensure a high degree of scientific accuracy, the design of this coin was verified by palaeontologists of the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta.
  • Unmatched detail is achieved through the technically demanding application of multiple finishes:  highlights shine and shadows deepen while the depth and texture of the scimitar's facial features are enhanced.
  • For our Canadian customers, this coin is GST/HST exempt.

About the Design:
Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi has crafted a heart-stopping portrait of a roaring scimitar cat, with its mouth open wide as it bares its lethal teeth and scimitars. The details are exquisite: luxurious fur, piercing eyes, razor-sharp teeth and a roughly textured tongue are all beautifully rendered with finely detailed engraving.

Packaging:
Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell case protected by a custom beauty box.

Description
From 1942 until the late 1960s, Looney Tunes were the most popular animated shorts to be shown in film theaters.  But as the golden era wound down, television would be the one to keep the laughs going by introducing the characters and their (mis)adventures to new generations.  In keeping with the playful nature of Looney Tunes, each coin features a hidden surprise element - look closely!

Depicts of a typical scene from Looney Tunes cartoons which featured Tweety. The little yellow canary with the oversized head and the large blue eyes stands in the centre of the image field, clearly alarmed as he bounces up and down while pointing to the right. His beak is open as though he is saying his catchphrase, “I tawt I taw a puddy tat…" He did! He did see a puddy tat! There, just reaching in on the right side of the image, is Sylvester’s outstretched paw as the persistent alley cat tries once more to ensnare his feathered foe.

Weight (g) - 31.39 (1 troy ounce)
Diameter (mm) - 38
Edge - serrated
Certificate - serialized (serial numbers will vary)

Description
To view an elk or wapiti (Cervus canadensis) in the wild is to catch a glimpse of one of Canada's most majestic animal species.  Armed with impressive antlers that give it a stately air, the elk moves through the wilderness with a steady, confident gait as it browses for the vegetation that sustains it throughout the seasons.  With this colored fine silver coin, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates this wild animal species - one that delights wildlife watchers and contributes to Canada's rich biodiversity.

Over half of Canada's total elk population can be found in British Columbia, with a sizable population found in the mountainous foothills and boreal forests of Alberta.  Elk are capable of adapting to a range of landscapes, from marshes to river flats and even semi-arid regions.  As partial migrants, they move with the seasons through areas that fall within the boundaries of what they consider to be their home
range - whether this consists of only a few square kilometers or several hundred.

An impressive addition to any nature-, wilderness-, or Canadiana-themed collection!

Special features:
  • The use of selective coloring enhances the finely detailed engraving and showcases the elk's natural coloring against the rich, green colors of the boreal forest.
  • Crafted in 99.99% pure silver with limited mintage, this coin makes a beautiful gift!
  • This timeless portrait of an elk in its natural habitat captures the beauty and majesty of both the western Canadian wilderness and a majestic animal species that is part of Canada's rich biodiversity.
  • Highly detailed engraving, a multi-finish background, and the use of color combine to bring depth and texture to a design that exemplifies the outstanding artistry and craftsmanship for which the Royal Canadian Mint is internationally renowned.
  • For our Canadian customers, this coin is GST/HST exempt.

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Maurade Baynton, this coin features a striking portrait of an elk, rendered in exquisite detail through expert engraving and selective color. The majestic, tan-colored elk stands tall in an open grassland area at the edge of a boreal forest that is resplendent in the green colors of summer. Perhaps hearing a call from a nearby herd or the warning sound of birds suddenly taking flight, the elk's head is turned to its right as it lifts its gaze upward to the sky; this allows the viewer to glimpse its beautiful facial features in side profile, along with the long, darker-colored mane that covers the elk's neck. Its distinctive, wide antlers are prominently displayed in the centre of the image field, where they seem every bit as majestic as the rugged mountain peaks seen in the engraved background.

Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell protected by a graphic beauty box.
