Pocket Change: 1941 5 Reichs Pfennig Germany, WW2 Swastika Emblem Circulated Coin

This relic of the World War II era was received in change from a self-service checkout machine at our local supermarket.  What I should have received was a U.S. penny - what I received instead was 1941 German 5 Reichs Pfennig coin.  The diameter closely matches an American 1 cent coin.  However, while an American penny has a plain edge, the edge on this coin is reeded.  This is the second such coin I've received in error in the past couple of years.  The other was a 1943, in a bit better condition, received in a roll of pennies.  

Checking our pocket change is second nature to most coin collectors.  You never know what might show up.  About a year ago, a local donut shop gave me a 1967 Jefferson Nickel Proof coin in my change.  It's interesting to speculate about how a coin never intended for circulation ended up in the cash register drawer of a donut shop. 

Probably the most common error that we find in our pocket change is the presence of Canadian circulation coinage.  Canadian pennies are still circulating widely in the U. S., though Canada stopped minting these one cent coins for circulation after May 4, 2012.  We have occasionally found coins from France, Italy, Spain, Australia, and Mexico - among other nations - in our change.  Most are older coins that are well worn, which may be one reason that they slipped by the merchants that originally received them.

Description

The Italian Campaign was Canada's first full-scale ground operation of the Second World War.  By the summer of 1943, the Allies were revitalized by victories in North Africa and were seeking to open up a second battlefront by invading Germany's Axis ally, Italy.  On the morning of July 10, 1943, Canada joined its allies in the planned invasion of Sicily; in September, they began their slow crawl up the mountainous Italian peninsula.  Although the Allies would ultimately be victorious, the 20-month operation proved to be a bitterly fought campaign against occupying Nazi forces who fiercely defended their hold at every turn.  On the 70th anniversary of this strategic operation, the Royal Canadian Mint honors Canada's veterans of this Second World War campaign with a fine silver coin that offers a glimpse of the realities of the war in places such as Ortona, Cassino and Rimini.

About the Design:

Designed by Canadian illustrator Joel Kimmel, your coin recreates the sense of danger and the fierce fighting that awaited Canadian soldiers in the narrow streets of Italian towns such as Ortona during the winter of 1943. In the background, the crumbling remnants of stone buildings are indicative of the sheer destruction caused by combat that was often fought in close quarters. In the centre, a Canadian Sherman tank rumbles through the rubble-filled streets, causing dust to fill the air behind it. The tank is flanked by two Canadian soldiers who, despite the risk of sniper fire and landmines, bravely move along the streets as they clear the town and search for survivors.

• The 1st Canadian Infantry Division and the 1st Canadian Army Tank Brigade joined nearly 3,000 Allied ships and landing craft for the launch of "Operation Husky" in Sicily.

• In August 1943, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met with U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Canada's prime minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King, in Québec where they discussed the upcoming invasion of the Italian mainland. The conference was nicknamed "Quadrant."

Description

The economic hardships of the Great Depression had left Canada's military undermanned and unprepared for the onset of war, and its equipment was at risk of being outdated.

Thanks to a national recruitment drive, over 58,000 men and women enlisted by the month's end. Coastal defenses were reinforced, militia regiments were mobilized, and the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) - which would eventually train nearly half of the Commonwealth's air crews on Canadian soil - was implemented. In December, units of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division set sail from Halifax to Britain - the first wave of Canadians who would serve overseas until the war's end in 1945.

Meanwhile, Canada's economy adapted quickly to the war effort and transformed the country into an economic power. New industries were created while existing factories converted to the production of wartime materials. Thousands of airplanes, ships, vehicles, guns and ammunition would be produced by factories in Canada, which became the fourth largest supplier among the Allied countries.
