One of the most dramatic coins released by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2013 was the "Dreamcatcher".  This unique pure silver coin presented a First Nations/Native American dreamcatcher in full color, and finished with a stunning hologram.  Beginning with a mirror-bright proof strike, the combination of finishes resulted in an extremely popular coin, which ultimately sold-out at the Mint.  (In the above photo, the areas that appear black are the mirror-bright silver surfaces reflecting the matte black back drop behind the camera.

Description

The “dreamcatcher” is an iconic identifying symbol of First Nations culture.  Variations of dreamcatchers are representative of cultures across each Canadian province, but they all have the same intention: to trap bad dreams and thoughts, and let good dreams pass through the hole at the web's center, and into the mind of the dreamer.  Each coin unites First Nations tradition with modern-day technology: a dreamcatcher set against a shiny holographic field.

Design

This coin's design is inspired by Canadian artist Darlene Gait.  It features a stunning full-color dreamcatcher over a hologram of the sky with clouds.  Composed of an external bent wood ring strung with an interior web of golden sinew, the dreamcatcher features bright blue quartz stones and a central opal; it bottom strung with rawhide ribbons decorated with red beads, and four orange and white wild bird feathers.  The reverse is engraved with the word "CANADA," the date "2013" and the face value of "10 DOLLARS."

Packaging

Each coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clam-shell case lined with flock and protected by a black sleeve.
